  • Often, we receive CVs from seasoned finance professionals/CFOs eager to explore job prospects in the UAE, particularly in Dubai and Abu Dhabi… But they are not available locally for interviews.
  • Here is what you should know.

UAE prefers candidates available locally

The local talent pool in the UAE already boasts exceptional candidates with substantial UAE and GCC experience.

Thus employers prefer locally available candidates.

Here is why:

  • Faster Onboarding: Local candidates can often start working more quickly since they don’t need to go through the process of relocating
  • Understanding of Local Business Environment: Employers may prefer candidates who are familiar with the local business culture, regulations, and market conditions.
  • Availability for Face-to-Face Meetings: Employers may want to meet candidates in person before making a hiring decision, which can be challenging if you’re not local.

Follow these steps if you are outside of the UAE

Network with Recruiters

  • Use online platforms like LinkedIn and professional networks to connect with finance professionals in the UAE.
  • This can help you learn about job openings and gain insights into the local market. (Pick up the phone and call them up!)

Apply Strategically

  • Focus on companies that are known for hiring expatriates or have a history of international recruitment.

Attend Events

Oscar Orellana Hyder – Former Head of Financial Services at Robert Walters Middle East says, “If you are a CFO and not from the UAE, find a CFO networking round table and politely ask to come along.”

There are dedicated events for Private Equity, as well as events for hedge funds, family offices, and many other fields. Some upcoming events taking place in the UAE

  • Hedge Funds: The Leading Alternative Investment Management Summit, AIM Summit Dubai 2023, The Financial Summit
  • Fintech: World Blockchain Summit in Dubai
  • Family Offices: The Financial Summit 2023, the Middle East Family Office Investment Summit.
  • Private Equity: SuperReturn Middle East, Exclusive Private Investment Summit in Abu Dhabi, AIM Summit Dubai 2023.

And there are a lot more!

Join relevant groups

  • Join groups related to your nationality or interests.
  • For example, there are Irish and Indian business networks in Dubai where you can meet fellow finance professionals.

Consider Relocating

  • If possible, be open to relocating to the UAE.
  • Being on the ground will allow you to build local networks and attend in-person interviews, which can be crucial in landing a senior finance role and making a positive impression.

In few words…

Hiring for sensitive roles like CFOs is rarely done remotely… you have to work the network!

Do you know a CFO who moved to the UAE recently with a job offer in hand?
